Project Summary

This project involved the construction of a new visitor security screening facility (VSF) and the modernization and repair of the monument elevator. The new VSF consists of a custom glazed exterior envelope, with ballistic and blast protection, and a series of interior partitions arranged to facilitate the screening process for visitors to the monument. Under this glazed enclosure is a bunker containing new HVAC and electrical systems for the VSF and elevators. The new HVAC system consists of new heat pumps connected to a geothermal well-field. Elevator upgrades included improvements to the existing elevator and its control system, elevator machine room access, and power distribution from the below grade bunker to the elevator machine room, and complete replacement of the fire alarm system.
